What is a Contact Lens Fitting?
Contact lens wear is a form of vision correction which involves the daily placement of soft (or rigid gas permeable) lenses onto the cornea. Because contact lenses are placed on the cornea and do not sit at a fixed distance like glasses do, a contact lens fitting is required to obtain an optimal fit in terms of comfort and vision. During your fitting, we will customize your contact lens prescription according to your visual and lifestyle needs (i.e. if you are a student who requires clear distance/near vision, have a profession that involves superior near vision, play sports that involve fine distance vision, or simply want to wear contact lenses on special occasions). Your fitting also allows us to educate you on proper insertion/removal techniques, cleaning/storing methods and replacement schedule for contact lens wearing success and maintenance of good ocular health.
Please see below for an outline of the the contact lens fitting process:
- First Appointment: Our contact lens technicians will do a consultation and preliminary fitting. This includes taking corneal measurements, assessing your visual/lifestyle needs, and showing you what your vision is like with contact lenses.
- If you would like to proceed with a fitting, we will train you on insertion/removal techniques, contact lens care and you will wear the trial lenses until your next appointment
- If you would like to proceed with a fitting, we will train you on insertion/removal techniques, contact lens care and you will wear the trial lenses until your next appointment
- Second Appointment: 1 – 2 weeks later, we will see you for a follow-up appointment to re-asses the contact lens fit, comfort, and vision.
- The trial and follow-up appointment process will continue until satisfactory comfort and vision are acquired. Please note that the duration of this process varies depending on the complexity of your prescription and needs.
